Department of Sociology

a. About Department (History) –

The Department of Sociology was established in 1968. M.A. in Sociology were started in the department from Academic year 2019-20. The numbers of students have obtained graduate degrees from the department, and they are placed in different organizations, universities and government in India.

In the fifty-Six years journey of the department, Dr. Vasant Yeshwant Vaidya, Prof. K. N. Kulkarni, lead the sound academic foundation of the department and contributed to its academic achievements.

In the year 2005, Miss. V. N. Khandare joined to the department with the retirement of Mr. Dr. Vasant Yeshwant Vaidya. Miss. V. N. Khandare took charge of the headship of the department. Mr. Vilas Pawar joined to the department as senior faculty since 2006.Currently two full time faculty are working in the department. The department holds an excellent record of good results and various activities like certificate course, guest lecture, class seminars.

b. Aims and Objectives of the Department–

  • To equip the students with the latest sociological knowledge, research aptitude and
  • To enrich student understands of the dynamics of Indian Society and the global social
  • To strengthen sociological research pertaining to the issues in the region in particular and nation in general.
  • To strengthen research in the thrust area of the Department namely Sociology of Development and Environment.
  • To encourage the students for various competitive examination i.e. SET/NET/MPSC/UPSC etc.
  • To organize seminars, conference, workshop, disseminate advanced knowledge among students.
  • To undertake extension activities and establish linkage with local communities.

c. Course Outcomes

  • Student will be able to demonstrate on understanding of how social call affects individual life
  • Social institutions are usually conceived of as the basic focuses of social organization.
  • transcending individuals and intention by mediating the rules that govern living behaviour.
  • This course gives insights about social change in India.
  • Principles of human rights are fundamental rights.
  • Social movements are a type of group action.
  • An attempt to familiarize students with the different sociological perspectives and theories.
  • Research methodology will be providing base for scientific thinking and rationalizing the minds, thoughts of students.
  • This course will helpful learner to understand the fundamental and foundational knowledge of sociological theories.
  • This course also helps to identify the research questions for inquiry and make able to the learners to formulate research proposal.
  • This course has importance and relevance in the knowing the social realities with using multiple approaches.
  • This course has aim to build up the capacity of the learners and make them able to understand the sociological perspectives to capture the social realities.
  • This course has importance in many ways to provide orientation to the students about the contemporary social movements India
  • This course would be helpful to provide foundational ideas of learners. This course enriches the sociological knowledge of the students.
  • The rural sociology and approaches and methods of village studies provide source of understanding the rural social structure.

d. Future Plans -

  • To organize the Certificate and Value-Added Courses.
  • To organize the Guest Lectures of Eminent Personalities.
  • To establish the MoUs with different institutions and organizations and undertake the various activities.
